When is the right time to neuter?

It is recommended to neuter kittens and puppies before they reach 6 months of age. The procedure can be done as soon as your pet is 4 to 4½ months old.

Why neuter?

While the first goal of sterilization is to prevent the animal from reproducing, it also offers other advantages for its health and behaviour.

Sterilized males:

  • Do not mark their territory
  • Will run away less
  • Do not suffer from prostate troubles (abscesses, tumours, hypertrophy)
  • Do not suffer from testicular tumours
  • Are less likely to suffer from tumours linked to sex hormones (around the anus)

Sterilized females:

  • Do not suffer inconvenient vulvar discharges when in heat
  • Do not have undesirable behaviour when in heat (especially the cats)
  • Will run away less
  • Do not suffer from ovarian or uterus cancer (infections, cysts, tumours)
  • Do not go through lactation during pseudopregnancy
  • Are less likely to suffer from mammary tumours
